I got back into the office today from a three day conference that was held offsite. It was a great chance to meet some of the people from the other banks and really get to see another side of the banking industry. So for most of today I have been working to get through the stuff I wasn't able to do last week.
I just read an article that was from one of our vendors used for check image storage. In it they were stating that their database now holds over 1 billion check images and uses 15 Petabytes of storage… Do you know how big a Petabyteis? It's frikin huge…
So most people are aware that a Gigabyte is equal to 1024 Megabytes. Therefore an 80 Gigabyte drive would be 81,920 Megabytes. According to Apple, you could store about 20,000 songs on an 80 Gigabyte drive. Well when you get 1024 Gigabyte together you get a Terabyte (1,048,576 Megabytes). If you were to ever group 1024 Terabytes together you would get 1 Petabyte (1,073,741,824 Megabyte). This would equate to approximately 262,144,000 (Million) songs according to Apple calculation. This data base 15 Petabytes which would equate to 3,932,160,000 (Billion) songs or 16,106,127,360 (Billion) Megabytes. And they are adding a million images a day to the database.
