I had to go on-site with a client today to do some work. Fortunately I finished up a bit early and was able to catch an early flight. It just so happened that this was a retirement flight for Captain Wally Carpeaux. Captain Wally has flown for Southwest Airlines for 11 years and tomorrow is is 60th birthday. According to FAA regulations he must retire at age 60 and this was his final flight.
Upon boarding the flight we were given a printout talking about Captain Wally and his 11 years of service. Just prior to leaving the Captain was presented with a bottle of champaign from the ground crew. As we were taxing out of the airport we were given a traditional salute by the fire department. They lined up their trucks up and spray the airplane as it rolled onto the runway. While in-flight the Captain said a few words and thanked everybody for their business, then all of the passengers sang happy birthday to him. Upon landing in Dallas we were again meet by the fire department for another water cannon salute. As we approached the gate, there were a bunch of employees on the ground and all of them were clapping and cheering. I even saw non Southwest employees lined up to show their respect.
I didn't know of Captain Wally Carpeaux until today, but I would like to thank him for his service and dedication to his job. With over 11,000 flight hours and 11 years of service to Southwest Airlines, I am sure he will be missed.
